Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity From Consumer Culture, Nov 5th, Hudson, NY

Where: St. Mary's School
429 East Allen Street
Hudson, NY 12534
When: 7pm, November 5, 2010
Entrance: Suggested $10.00 donation and a food pantry donation
To Register: http://radicalhomemakers.eventbrite.com

As our economy and environment crumble around us, how can we move into radical adaptation to face the challenges before us?
The Hayes family has a long history of farming, education and activism and Shannon has truly captured this transitional moment in small farming, homesteading, post peak consumerism and the reclamation of the kitchen table. Her message speaks to the work many are doing to recapture the independence of the individual household from the 'To-Go' corporate culture, while restoring community, ecological integrity, social and economic justice and democracy through small but profound measures of individual action. This is the next step in the maturation of a movement that our region is the poster child for.

Radical Homemakers is about men and women across the U.S. who focus on home and hearth as a political and ecological act, and who have centered their lives around family and community for personal fulfillment and cultural change. It explores what domesticity looks like in an era that has benefited from feminism, where domination and oppression are cast aside and where the choice to stay home is no longer equated with mind-numbing drudgery, economic insecurity, or relentless servitude.

Radical Homemakers nationwide speak about empowerment, transformation, happiness, and casting aside the pressures of a consumer culture to live in a world where money loses its power to relationships, independent thought, and creativity. If you ever considered quitting a job to plant tomatoes, read to a child, pursue creative work, can green beans and heal the planet, this is your book.

FarmAssist Productions

We are a small, independent farm and food advocacy, educational and networking organization. We work toward the inter and independence of our farmer, non-farmer and nonprofit organization neighbors as we strive to increase Bioregional Foodshed Security in the Greater Hudson Valley. For the entire Fall 2010 workshop and event schedule go to: http://farmassistproductionsfall2010.eventbrite.com

This promises to be one of the most important small farming and good, safe food events of the year in our area. Shannon will be the keynote speaker at the ACRES, USA conference this year. Aside from her extremely compelling message, the timing is important as the Senate will be voting on the Food Safety Bill (S510) during a lame duck session soon after the election next week (more info: http://farmandranchfreedom.org/food_safety_bills_09).

Gasland Film Screening, Wednesday, Sept 15, Bedford

 GASLAND

ASSEMBLYMAN CASTELLI TO
HOST INFORMATIVE FILM ON GAS DRILLING
AND THE DANGERS OF HYDROFRACKING

Assemblyman Robert J. Assemblyman Castelli noted the documentary reveals the consequences of natural gas drilling across the United States.  Much of the recent expansion of drilling has been spurred by the increase in deep well hydrofracking, a practice that threatens to open up the Marcellus Shale in central New York to large-scale industrial drilling practices.

Assemblyman Castelli is hosting the film to inform the public about some of the impacts that hydrofracking may bring to New York’s communities and all those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP.

WHAT:           Screening of the documentary “Gasland”

Meetup: Trip to Long Island Green Dome

Kevin Shea has invited us to visit his off-the-grid Long Island Green Dome! We'll carpool out there to lunch and explore the various methods he has used to produce his own heat and electricity, conserve water, and find out what troubles he has encountered along the way. Should be a lot of fun, and especially interesting to people considering their own energy reducing or energy producing projects.

Find out how he installed his own solar panels for electric, geothermal system for heating and cooling, and wind power generation.

The dome is super energy efficient, and sells power into the grid now. We'll even get to check out the radiant heat floors, low flow toilets, a waterless urinal, a system that captures hot water from the shower and recirculates it for heat, and so much more.

We'll meet at noon at the dome, tour the property... read more and RSVP

The Dome is in Baiting Hollow, NY

Special Announcement to Katonah Green Readers: Fresh Local Organic Produce Buyer's Club

Doug DeCandia from Digger's East Farmstand at the Ryder Farm

Interested in buying farm fresh produce and in the process supporting local agriculture?

I am forming a sort of "buyers club" - one in which I send out a weekly, or bi-weekly, e-mail with what we will have available for that week - and you write back with what you would like and when you can pick it up at the farm.

Interested, here is how I am thinking this can work:
- I send out an email at the beginning of the week with what we have available
- you write me back with what you would like and when you can pick it up (I would like to provide you with the freshest of produce, so if you can tell me at least a day in advance I can harvest within the day, and hopefully that day)
***PLEASE INCLUDE IN SUBJECT LINE - "Produce Order - and your pickup day"***
- pickup will be at the farm, or we can work out another arrangement on an individual basis.
- if you can call me before you come - it would best so that I can be sure to meet you.

Thank you all so very much for your support. I am very excited for this.

Nature Quest at Bylane Farm, Opening Day Sunday, May 23rd, Katonah, NY

The New NATURE QUEST SELF-GUIDED TOUR at Bylane Farm!

Learn about our local birds and have fun at the same time at the new “Nature Quest,” opening May 23 at Bylane Farm, Katonah. Free.

A Quest is a self-guided nature tour that uses a series of questions and clues to entertain and teach visitors about an aspect of the natural world. The new Quest will officially open and the public is welcome to visit Bylane anytime during the day (the trails officially close at dusk).

Westchester Land Trust and the Bedford Audubon Society invite you to participate in the opening of a new Nature Quest on Sunday, May 23, at Bedford Audubon’s Bylane Farm in Katonah.

The Quest is designed for all ages – especially families with children – and will introduce both novices and more experienced birdwatchers to the habits and habitats of a dozen or more of the fascinating birds that make their homes at Bylane, plus the trees, shrubs and other animals that share the habitat.

The creation of this Quest was generously sponsored by Jennifer and Roger Schwartz through the Louis and Anne Abrons Family Foundation.

Completion of the Quest takes a little over an hour. Bylane Farm is at 35 Todd Road, Katonah.

Westchester Land Trust now has three Quests, each designed to appeal to a range of age groups, including children (the Land Trust’s other Quests are at the Frederick P. Rose Preserve, in Cross River, and Westchester Wilderness Walk, in Pound Ridge).

The new Quest was designed in partnership with Bedford Audubon Society, a locally based chapter of the National Audubon Society. Founded in 1913, Bedford Audubon serves much of northern Westchester and Putnam Counties. Its mission is to promote environmental education, grass-roots activism, public and private conservation efforts, and preservation and protection of open space.

Founded in 1988, Westchester Land Trust has helped preserve more than 6,600 acres in 28 communities. Its mission is to preserve land in partnership with private property owners; help communities create new parks and preserves; and foster sound land use planning.
