Lecture: Woodland Wildflower Restoration, Wednesday, March 13th, Katonah

Lecture: Woodland Wildflower Restoration with Jessica Arcate Schuler

Join the Bedford Audubon Society for the first in a free three-part series on Westchester Wildflower Conservation, co-sponsored by Bedford Audubon, Mianus River Gorge, Pound Ridge Land Conservancy, & Westchester Land Trust.

Jessica A. Schuler, Director of the Thain Family Forest at The New York Botanical Garden, will describe how NYBG is using historical collections and modern field surveys to identify and restore extirpated, or locally extinct, native flora in the 50-acre old-growth urban forest. While the exact causes of extirpation are unknown, overcollecting, soil compaction, pollution, invasive species, and climate change are suspected culprits in the disappearance of many native species, including wildflowers.

Wednesday, March 13th
Refreshments served at 7pm, lecture begins at 7:30pm
Katonah Village Library, 26 Bedford Road, Katonah

All events are free, but please pre-register with Evelyn@westchesterlandtrust.org or call 914.234.6992 ext. 24.  For more information visit: www.WestchesterLandTrust.org/wildflowers

The Making of a Conservationist: Leon Levy Environmental Symposium, Sunday, Mar 6, Bedford

Author Alex Shoumatoff, right, will speak at the third annual Leon Levy Environmental Symposium, Sunday, March 6, in Bedford Village. He is shown here with a Siberian berry picker he met while researching a story for Vanity Fair magazine.
The Westchester Land Trust is thrilled to confirm that legendary journalist, travel writer, world explorer, environmental activist — and Bedford native — Alex Shoumatoff will be the featured speaker at WLT’s Leon Levy Environmental Symposium.

The event happens Sunday, March 6th, at 3pm, at the Bedford Village Historical Hall. Admission is free and the symposium is followed by an informal reception.

Shoumatoff is one of the most far-flung of environmental and travel writers. He writes for Vanity Fair, is a former New Yorker staff writer, has authored 10 books, and his website Dispatches From a Vanishing World, dedicated to raising consciousness about disappearing species and cultures, is visited by readers from over 90 countries every month.

A graduate of Rippowam-Cisqua School (and later of Harvard University), Shoumatoff credits his youth in Bedford as the primary force in making him a committed, passionate conservationist.

As a young man, he was curator of the Marsh Sanctuary in Mount Kisco and taught natural history at Rippowam-Cisqua, having inherited a love of the outdoors from his father and brother. Nicholas Shoumatoff Sr. was president of Westmoreland Sanctuary and Bedford Audubon; Nicholas Jr. was curator of the Trailside Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

Appropriately, his talk is “Westchester, Bedford and the Making of a Conservationist,” and will focus on how his youth here led to his career as a writer and activist on environmental issues.

Seating is limited so please RSVP to grace@Westchesterlandtrust.org or RSVP on Facebook or Eventbrite

Gasland Film Screening, Wednesday, Sept 15, Bedford

 GASLAND

ASSEMBLYMAN CASTELLI TO
HOST INFORMATIVE FILM ON GAS DRILLING
AND THE DANGERS OF HYDROFRACKING

Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli (R, C, I-Goldens Bridge) is hosting a viewing of “Gasland,” a documentary about the natural gas industry on Wednesday, September 15th in the courtroom at Bedford Town Hall. Prior to the screening, Assemblyman Castelli will be joined by speakers from the Sierra Club and Citizens Campaign for the Environment.

Assemblyman Castelli noted the documentary reveals the consequences of natural gas drilling across the United States.  Much of the recent expansion of drilling has been spurred by the increase in deep well hydrofracking, a practice that threatens to open up the Marcellus Shale in central New York to large-scale industrial drilling practices.

Assemblyman Castelli is hosting the film to inform the public about some of the impacts that hydrofracking may bring to New York’s communities and all those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP.

WHAT:           Screening of the documentary “Gasland”

WHEN:           September 15th
                        Promptly at 6:00 p.m.

WHERE:        Bedford Town Court
321 Bedford Rd, Bedford Hills, NY, 10507

CONTACT:    Assemblyman Castelli’s office at (914) 686 – 7335 to RSVP.

*** MEDIA ARE INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND ***
**EXCELLENT INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE**
