Field Trip: Explore Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Join Naturalist-in-Residence Tait Johansson for high tide in the bay, which sends shorebirds in impressive numbers to the refuge’s impoundments. You should also see herons, egrets, Glossy Ibis, and many others! Bring binoculars, lunch, sunscreen, plenty of cold drinks, and boots you don’t mind getting muddy. Lecture: Woodland Wildflower Restoration with Jessica Arcate Schuler

Join the Bedford Audubon Society for the first in a free three-part series on Westchester Wildflower Conservation, co-sponsored by Bedford Audubon, Mianus River Gorge, Pound Ridge Land Conservancy, & Westchester Land Trust.

Jessica A. Schuler, Director of the Thain Family Forest at The New York Botanical Garden, will describe how NYBG is using historical collections and modern field surveys to identify and restore extirpated, or locally extinct, native flora in the 50-acre old-growth urban forest. While the exact causes of extirpation are unknown, overcollecting, soil compaction, pollution, invasive species, and climate change are suspected culprits in the disappearance of many native species, including wildflowers.

Yearning to get your hands dirty, but no time or room for a garden of your own?

Join the Bird Friendly Vegetable Garden at Bedford Audubon’s Bylane Farm and enjoy fresh veggies, flowers, and herbs all season long!
Novice and seasoned gardeners alike are welcomed to help us start seeds, plant, maintain, and enjoy the season-long abundance of the Garden. Gardeners tend more than 25 beds together at Bedford Audubon’s Bylane Farm in Katonah, where we raise a wide variety of produce for take home by Garden members and for the food bank at the Northern Westchester Community Center. The season starts in March with indoor seed sowing, by April we’re in the Garden, and we’re harvesting greens and herbs in May!

Membership includes 20 hands-on workshops led by Master Gardener Cathy Clare on garden design, composting, companion planting, and pesticide-free methods of cultivation that are good for people and the environment. Two sessions are available: Mondays 9:30-11:30am and Saturdays 10am-12pm, starting the week of April 2nd.

Nature Quest at Bylane Farm, Opening Day Sunday, May 23rd, Katonah, NY

The New NATURE QUEST SELF-GUIDED TOUR at Bylane Farm!

Learn about our local birds and have fun at the same time at the new “Nature Quest,” opening May 23 at Bylane Farm, Katonah. Free.

A Quest is a self-guided nature tour that uses a series of questions and clues to entertain and teach visitors about an aspect of the natural world. The new Quest will officially open and the public is welcome to visit Bylane anytime during the day (the trails officially close at dusk).

Westchester Land Trust and the Bedford Audubon Society invite you to participate in the opening of a new Nature Quest on Sunday, May 23, at Bedford Audubon’s Bylane Farm in Katonah.

The Quest is designed for all ages – especially families with children – and will introduce both novices and more experienced birdwatchers to the habits and habitats of a dozen or more of the fascinating birds that make their homes at Bylane, plus the trees, shrubs and other animals that share the habitat.

The creation of this Quest was generously sponsored by Jennifer and Roger Schwartz through the Louis and Anne Abrons Family Foundation.

Completion of the Quest takes a little over an hour. Bylane Farm is at 35 Todd Road, Katonah.

Westchester Land Trust now has three Quests, each designed to appeal to a range of age groups, including children (the Land Trust’s other Quests are at the Frederick P. Rose Preserve, in Cross River, and Westchester Wilderness Walk, in Pound Ridge).

The new Quest was designed in partnership with Bedford Audubon Society, a locally based chapter of the National Audubon Society. Founded in 1913, Bedford Audubon serves much of northern Westchester and Putnam Counties. Its mission is to promote environmental education, grass-roots activism, public and private conservation efforts, and preservation and protection of open space.

Founded in 1988, Westchester Land Trust has helped preserve more than 6,600 acres in 28 communities. Its mission is to preserve land in partnership with private property owners; help communities create new parks and preserves; and foster sound land use planning.

Lighthouse Point is one of the most popular spots for bird watching along the East Coast. Each fall and spring, thousands of songbirds and birds of prey are seen in the migratory oasis along Morris Creek. We should expect to see Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks, American Kestrels, Northern Harrier, and Osprey. Driving directions: http://tinyurl.com/hawkwalk. The First “Bountiful Backyard” Celebration

The inaugural season at Bylane Farm’s newly established pesticide-free, bird-friendly vegetable garden has been a smashing success. A ground-breaking Intergeneration Summer Program was held for children and seniors, and a whopping crop of 177 pounds of produce have been harvested and donated to the Mount Kisco Community Center.

As a fitting conclusion to this program and in celebration and appreciation of the many volunteers from Master Gardeners and others who have worked tirelessly through the summer to keep up the garden, we invite the community to a festive day at Bylane Farm.

The day’s program will include:

• Workshops in harvesting/storing of vegetables (root cellaring and drying)

• Demonstrations on how to attract birds to your garden and make bird houses from gourds

• Book Sale - over 500 bird books will be offered for sale starting at $2.00 each

• Nature walks with Naturalist Tait Johansson

• Handouts, displays

• Refreshments

Rain or shine. Admission is free. Please follow signs to parking area across the street from Bylane. Please do not park on Todd Road.

Hike at the Hunt-Parker Sanctuary, Friday, Oct 2nd

Our next walk will be on Friday, October 2nd at 1 p.m. at the Hunt-Parker Sanctuary owned by the Bedford Audubon Society at 35 Todd Road. (By the way, the Bedford Audubon Society, in spite of its name, is the local chapter of the Audubon Society which includes Lewisboro).

This walk begins with a long climb and then continues on lovely trails in the woods, ending at North Salem Road which we will cross and then continue east in the Mount Holly Sanctuary, which ends on Mt. Holly Road. Total distance will be about 3 miles of hills and valleys in the forest. This should take us a couple of hours, depending on how often we stop to look at things! Please wear boots as there are some steep places. We will meet at the Bedford Audubon Society's Bylane Farm at 35 Todd Road.

Directions: from the intersection of Route 35 and Route 22, go north on Route 22. Turn right onto Todd Road (there is a big white town shield-shaped sign) and when the dirt road turns into pavement, keep an eye out for #35. We will be there to help you park. At the end of the walk we will use one of our cars to ferry drivers back to Bylane for their cars.
