Lewisboro Environmental Film & Discussion Series: Chasing Ice. Saturday, Nov 23

Saturday's in Lewisboro just got even better! Head to the farmer's market in the morning for hot organic coffee, samples of some tasty foods, and fresh baked goods from regional artisan bakers, while you choose from the best our region offers in meats, vegetables, cheeses and more; then head over to the recycling center to drop off those hard-to-dispose of electronics (9-12); then plan an evening out. We'll be showing a great film and then have plenty of time for discussion and catching up with friends!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd, 7pm
Lewisboro Library, 15 Main St, South Salem

"Heart stopping"  "Breathtaking"

Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to change history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Photographer James Balog deployed time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. For more on the film, go to http://www.chasingice.com.

Presented by the Lewisboro Sustainability Committee. Sponsored by Ring's End Lumber and Gossett's Winter Farmer's Market and Energize Lewisboro, the town's home energy efficiency program.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per person, or $10 per family. GMO free popcorn and herbal teas with local honey will be served!

You may register by calling the library at 763-3857, or sending an email to lewisborolibrary@gmail.com

Illustrated lecture “The Kitchen Mycologist”, Wednesday, Oct 9, Katonah

OCT 9: Illustrated lecture “The Kitchen Mycologist” with author Eugenia Bone. Katonah Village Library. Free.

Refreshments will be served at 7pm and the lecture will begin at 7:30 in the Garden Room

Ms. Bone’s illustrated lecture “The Kitchen Mycologist” will explain how a bit of mycology will make you a better mycophagist. She’ll explore why some mushrooms more expensive than others, and why are some only found in the wild and others cultivated? Why do mushrooms cook the way they do? Why does one nutritionist say mushrooms have no nutrition, and another says they are key to nutritional health? How do I avoid getting ripped off when buying truffles and truffle products? And are they really aphrodisiacs?

Eugenia Bone is a nationally known food writer and lecturer, and the President of the New York Mycological Society. With three books on food and cooking, and articles printed in The New York Times Magazine, The National Lampoon, Saveur, Food & Wine, Gourmet, Fine Cooking, The Wine Enthusiast, and Martha Stewart Living, Ms. Bone boldly steered into a new frontier to study the science of fungi for her fourth book, “Mycophilia: Revelations from the Weird World of Mushrooms.” Delving into the topic uncovered mushroom mysteries, and cultivated a deeper understanding of nature.

Gasland Part II Screening: Wednesday, September 11th Rye

Grassroots Environmental Education & Wainwright House

present...

GASLAND II

The sequel to "GASLAND," this film not only continues to explore the damage to our nation from the practice of drilling for natural gas using horizontal hydrofracking, but also includes interviews with scientific experts about why fracking can never be done safely and the economic and technical capacity for renewable energy resources that are readily available eliminating the need for further drilling for dirty fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas.  The film sheds light on the biggest concern that " the enormously powerful oil and gas industry has not only contaminated our water, air and land, but also our democracy".

Food Rescue Forum: Monday, August 12th, Valhalla

Food Rescue Forum (for all Food Industries)

Westchester County's Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) invites representatives from all food-related industries to attend its Food Rescue Forum on August 12, 2013. Please note that this date has been revised from previous postings.

The Food Rescue Forum, a cooperative effort with the Food Bank for Westchester and Rock & Wrap It Up!, Inc., will be hosted at the county’s Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF), located on the Grasslands Campus, 15 Woods Road, Valhalla. Attendees will learn about ways that businesses can reduce waste, conserve resources and alleviate hunger simply by reducing the amount of food thrown in the garbage. The program will focus primarily on “food rescue,” i.e. efforts to support the distribution of untouched, fresh or packaged food to local houses of worship, food pantries and soup kitchens to feed the hungry.

Discussions will also touch upon systems and technologies available for dealing with spoiled or leftover food scraps, such as the Ecovim™ technology, which has been part of a summer 2013 food waste pilot program at the H-MRF. The Ecovim unit, on loan to the county from OWARECO, LLC, is being utilized to demonstrate alternative methods of waste management to Westchester's local businesses, schools, and other institutions. The Ecovim dehydrates up to 250 pounds of food scraps 24 hours, producing a product that is reduced by 80 to 90 percent of its original volume, and can be used as a soil amendment or animal feed stock.

This event builds upon the Food Rescue Forum hosted by the county in April targeted at schools and colleges. The August 12th forum will broaden its scope to include all food-related and hospitality industries. Representatives from hotels, conference centers, schools, restaurants, supermarkets, hospitals, institutions, and any other interested parties are encouraged to come.

To RSVP click here

Monday, August 12th
10AM - 12 PM
County's Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF)
on Grasslands Campus:

Epic Canoe Trip: Symbolic Enactment, Saturday July 27th Albany

Epic Canoe Trip: Symbolic Enactment

They will begin with a cultural and educational festival near Albany on Saturday, July 27 and the flotilla will set off the following morning. They will paddle between 9 and 15 miles each day and camp along the route. There will be educational and cultural events along the way, some large and others small. The gatherings will feature talks by Haudenosaunee leaders and allies and cultural sharing. Click here to see the most up-to-date version of the itinerary.
They will arrive in New York City on Friday, August 9 to participate in the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

The symbolic enactment and related events will draw thousands of people to the Hudson to learn and be inspired to create an equitable and sustainable future for all in the Hudson Valley and beyond. The events will attract tourists as well as residents. They aim to educate and inspire attendees to transform their relationship to the river and all parts of the natural world, incorporating a sense of historic responsibility for the environment and justice for the original inhabitants of this land.

At each of our stops, they will need logistical assistance from local supporters. Below the list of ideas for ways to provide support is the current, nearly-final itinerary. If you can help at a particular location, please contact the appropriate person directly. If you have more general ideas/suggestions/offers of assistance, you can contact Andy Mager or Hickory Edwards. They will generally be leaving each morning as the tide is going out which will typically be between 10 and 11 daily.

Ways You can Help
-Provide and/or arrange for housing for people who aren’t able to camp
-Identify potential overflow camping areas if they fill up our spots
-Assist with on the ground logistical support, setting up for events/camping, directing people to park, running errands, setting up signs, be part of our “leave no trace” cleanup crew…
-Raise funds to help support the journey
-Solicit donations of food from area stores and farmers
-Bring food and/or arrange for others to do so to our breakfast, lunch or dinner spots
-Assist with transport/pickup of new people joining us, help identify places where cars can be left
-Help with publicity and media relations, both before and during the event. Contact Lindsay Speer.
-Help organize an event for us in your community when they arrive, including seeking support and welcome from local leaders
-Help fill two specific requests: A pontoon boat or other boat with a flat deck -and a captain!- to assist the media team, and a solar device-charging station. (Keeping media team’s computers, cell phones, and cameras charged is a key logistical challenge)

Making Sure Our Voices are Heard: Fundraiser for chair of the NYS Energy Committee Sunday, July 14, Lewisboro

Amy Paulin is truly a special “politician.” You will not only be supporting KatonahGreen, and of course Amy, when you come—you will be supporting a great addition to state leadership and you’ll be making a big difference for the state:

Amy Paulin, in her fifth term representing the 8th New York State Assembly District, is now Chair of the Energy Committee and in a powerful position to help guide the State’s approach to environmental protection and clean energy. Her emerging body of work in the Energy field builds on her previous leadership positions in areas such as children and families, alcoholism and drug abuse prevention and intervention, and support of people with disabilities.

Amy’s record is one of across the aisle collaboration, coupled with a strong progressive commitment. That combination has allowed her to pass more legislation than 97% of her colleagues. Now, with energy, she’s just getting started!

Hudson Clearwater Revival Festival: Saturday/Sunday June 15/16, Croton-on-Hudson

Hudson Clearwater Revival Festival

The 2013 Clearwater Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16 at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County, NY.  Festival gates open to attendees at 9AM.

Come visit Katonah Green's founder, Heather Flournoy, at the Green Cities Expo Tent at the revival. Besides a great music line up (my favorites this year are: Judy Collins, Hot Tuna, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Westchester's own Matt Turk. But there are so many more!) this festival is a unifying and rejuvenating event for people who care about environmental sustainability.

Join thousands of people as they spend a weekend enjoying the music and beautiful park.

About the festival: The 2013 Clearwater Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16 at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County, NY.  Festival gates open to attendees at 9AM.

Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival (aka “the Clearwater Festival” or “Revival”) features seven sustainably powered stages with diverse music, dance, storytelling and family-oriented programming as well as juried crafts, the Green Living Expo, the Working Waterfront with small boat exhibits and rides, an artisanal food & farm market, environmental education displays and exhibits, and the Circle of Song where audience participation is the focus. The festival is wheelchair accessible and most stage programming is staffed with American Sign Language interpreters.

Inspired by Pete Seeger’s desire to clean up the river over forty years ago, Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival initially helped raise the funds to build the sloop Clearwater, which has since become a world-renowned floating classroom and a symbol of effective grassroots action. Today, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. is a non-profit organization that sails at the forefront of the nation’s environmental challenges. The revenue raised by the Revival goes to support Clearwater’s numerous educational programs and its work toward environmental and social justice—as well as keeping the sloop Clearwater afloat. - See more at: http://www.clearwaterfestival.org/festival-info/about-the-festival/#sthash.8LwISBwJ.dpuf
