Summit Creates Local Grassroots Coalition for Environmental Change

Over 100 Westchester area organizations have partnered with the Bedford Environmental Summit (BES), a grassroots effort culminating on January 31, 2009, in a full-day event to raise awareness of the most pressing environmental issues of the day.

The Summit will offer a comprehensive format of 28 workshops and lectures, networking opportunities and an expo. Drawing from the best minds in environmental policy, the Summit’s roster of 85 speakers and panelists will address issues like oil consumption, school food, a climate action plan for Bedford, locally supported agriculture, school and community gardens, oceans in peril, biodiversity, water conservation and recycling, among others.

“We expect that every individual who attends the Summit will walk away with a better understanding of what each of us can do, in our own backyard, to address the environmental issues we face today,” said Steering Committee Chair, Olivia Farr.

The Summit will be held at Fox Lane High School. Tickets for the event are $25 in advance online and $35 on the day of the event. Student tickets are $10. To purchase your ticket, or for more information about the Summit, go to www.sustainablebedford.org.

Sunraven Mindful Gardening Project : Sunday February 1, 1-3PM, Monday February 2, 7-9PM

Mindful Gardening Project 2009

Sunday February 1, 1:00-3:00PM & Monday February 2, 7:00-9:00PM

It is not too soon to start thinking about the gardening season. In fact with the weather outside now, it is comforting to think of warmer days ahead.

The Mindful Garden Project at SunRaven is entering its fourth season and is open to new members! For those interested it is important to attend one of the two meetings that will be held at the beginning of next month. A final date for commitment will follow soon afterward, (believe it or not, we will begin planting on March 1st, just 7 weeks away!)

If you cannot attend one of these two meetings, but are interested in participating in the project please contact me directly at garden@sunraven.org. Since there is a limited number of spaces available, priority will be given to those who attend the meetings and on a first come first served basis.
