Food Rescue Forum: Monday, August 12th, Valhalla

Food Rescue Forum (for all Food Industries)

Westchester County's Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) invites representatives from all food-related industries to attend its Food Rescue Forum on August 12, 2013. Please note that this date has been revised from previous postings.

The Food Rescue Forum, a cooperative effort with the Food Bank for Westchester and Rock & Wrap It Up!, Inc., will be hosted at the county’s Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF), located on the Grasslands Campus, 15 Woods Road, Valhalla. Attendees will learn about ways that businesses can reduce waste, conserve resources and alleviate hunger simply by reducing the amount of food thrown in the garbage. The program will focus primarily on “food rescue,” i.e. efforts to support the distribution of untouched, fresh or packaged food to local houses of worship, food pantries and soup kitchens to feed the hungry.

Discussions will also touch upon systems and technologies available for dealing with spoiled or leftover food scraps, such as the Ecovim™ technology, which has been part of a summer 2013 food waste pilot program at the H-MRF. The Ecovim unit, on loan to the county from OWARECO, LLC, is being utilized to demonstrate alternative methods of waste management to Westchester's local businesses, schools, and other institutions. The Ecovim dehydrates up to 250 pounds of food scraps 24 hours, producing a product that is reduced by 80 to 90 percent of its original volume, and can be used as a soil amendment or animal feed stock.

This event builds upon the Food Rescue Forum hosted by the county in April targeted at schools and colleges. The August 12th forum will broaden its scope to include all food-related and hospitality industries. Representatives from hotels, conference centers, schools, restaurants, supermarkets, hospitals, institutions, and any other interested parties are encouraged to come.
