Annie Novack "Urban Farms, Upstate Lands & Local Food", Thursday, Jan 20th

WESTCHESTER LAND TRUST'S “Food, Land, Sustainability” Lecture

Farmer-activist Annie Novak, the founder and executive director of Growing Chefs and co-founder of the Eagle Street Rooftop Farm in Brooklyn, will give the “Food, Land, Sustainability” lecture at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, on Thursday, January 20, 2011.


Annie’s talk will start at 7 p.m. in the Sarah Lawrence’s Heimbold Visual Arts Center.

The co-sponsor of the event is Sarah Lawrence College.

The public is welcome (there's a suggested donation of $15), but space is limited so please RSVP to grace@westchesterlandtrust.org, to make sure we save a seat for you.

Annie's talk is called “Urban Farms, Upstate Lands & Local Food,” and will focus on the connection between growing food in the city and the preservation of farmland in the Hudson Valley; the growth of our local food system; and issues of access to farmland for young farmers.

Her work has been featured on CNN, in New York magazine ("A Guide to the City's Urban Farmers"), on Salon.com and many other news outlets.

A Sarah Lawrence graduate, she founded Growing Chefs in 2005 as a way to connect people to food, from the soil to the kitchen. Growing Chefs offers educational programming in farming, gardening and cooking with simple recipes using seasonal ingredients.
 
Eagle Street Rooftop Farm is a 6,000 square foot green roof organic vegetable farm located atop a warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The farmers at Eagle Street supply a community supported agriculture program (CSA) and an onsite farm market, and bicycle fresh produce to area restaurants.
 
Last year’s “Food, Land, Sustainability” talk at Sarah Lawrence was given by Josh Viertel, executive director of Slow Food USA.
